Budget-Friendly Activities for Fall

Budget-Friendly Activities for Fall Budget-Friendly Activities for Fall Budget-Friendly Activities for FallIt’s still possible to live you best life when money is tight. Here are three ways to save this fall and still have fun.As of September 23, fall is officially upon us. The days are getting shorter. The nights are getting cooler. The kids are back in school, and the holiday season is fast approaching. For many of us, autumn is a time of transformation, celebration, excitement, and all the seasonal festivities that come with it. In the spirit of the changing seasons, we’ve come up with three ways to take advantage of this time of year, keeping your pocketbook, of course, in mind.1. Make your own pumpkin spiceThese days, the highly anticipated return of the pumpkin spice drinks and treats makes headline after headline after headline. But at several dollars a pop, these delicacies may not be the wisest use of our monthly resources. The good news is you can make a pumpkin spice blend at home and add it to anything you wish â€" a much more economical option.Although pumpkin spice may seem like a new trend, its main components â€" nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves â€" have been used to flavor food for a very long time. The first branded “pumpkin pie spice” came to market in the 1950s, was shortened to “pumpkin spice” in the 1960s, and has been used to flavor everything from coffee to pastries to soups ever since.Making your own pumpkin spice at home is easy. This recipe from BudgetBytes yields about a half cup of the spice blend, which will last a year if properly stored. Blog founder Beth Moncel cautions that, as with all spices and herbs, the quality of this blend will degrade over time. “The freshness of this homemade pumpkin pie spice is only as good as the oldest ingredient used,” she writes, “so make sure all your spices are nice and fresh before preparing this blend.”Using up the spice blend shouldn’t be a problem, as Moncel has developed many wallet-friendly friendly recipes that use it, including:Bak ed Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal ($0.78/serving)  Pumpkin Spice Granola ($0.64/serving)Pumpkin Cream Cheese Spread ($0.27/serving)  Pumpkin Molasses Bread ($0.35/serving)Pumpkin Smoothies ($1.27/serving).Want to recreate the iconic latte at home? Try this recipe from the Kitchn. For even more authentic froth, put the warm milk in a French press and plunge up and down rapidly. This will aerate the milk and make it frothy, similar to what baristas do to froth the milk at the coffee shop.  2. Go leaf peepingOne of the greatest pleasures of fall is the changing color of the leaves. Spend time enjoying them while you can! Depending on where you live in the country, you may only be minutes away from a fantastic show. Every year, the National Weather Service (NWS) puts out the Fall Colors Report, which outlines when you can expect the colorful show to come to your neck of the woods and what kind of show you can expect it to be.It all depends on the weather. If autumn is too cold too soon, the leaves may fall off trees before they get a chance to change color. According to the NWS, the best fall foliage occurs when there are “warm sunny days and cool, but not freezing, nights.”What can you expect this year? Although it’s hard to predict, the Smokey Mountain website created this very cool interactive map to help you estimate when colors will be at their peak near you.  For a family fun activity, collect as many colorful leaves as you can. Try to identify them using the resources available on the US National Arboretum website or a book borrowed from your local library. Then, press and preserve them!3. Visit your nearest national parkOne of the best ways to enjoy the changing seasons is to get outside and explore. What better way to do that than to visit your nearest forest or wildland preserve, state park, or national park. One might be closer than you think. The National Park Trust provides a look-up tool to find you nearest national park, including national monuments, batt lefields, trails, waterways, and historic sites. Most of these are free and open to the public, or available to explore for a nominal fee. The site also allows you to search by state. For city or state-level parks and preserves, search the local municipality’s website. Or use Discover the Forest to find woodlands near you and use America’s State Parks to find the closest state park to where you live.Don’t forget to plan your trip. Parks and preserves often a multitude of budget-friendly activities, including hiking, camping, and kayaking, along with educational programming and community events. You could also just pack a picnicâ€"perhaps with a homemade pumpkin spice dessertâ€"and enjoy some time outside. What to do with your savingsPlanning fun, budget-friendly activities may leave you with a few extra dollars in your wallet this fall. When this happens, we always recommend putting that moneyâ€"no matter the amountâ€"toward an emergency fund. When an unexpected expense arises, you’ll be glad you have some money stashed away.  For additional money saving options, check out these links below:5 Expenses to Cut Instead of CoffeeEating Healthy Doesn’t Have to Break the BankHow to Save Money Every WeekHow to Use the Library to Save MoneyHow to Save Money When You’re Making Minimum Wage

The MCAT Tutor The Importance of Collaboration

Everyone needs a hand sometimes. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reading The Eighth Day of Creation: Makers of the Revolution in Biology by Horace Freeland Judson. Judson sought to capture the characters, problems, successes, and false starts in the development of molecular biology. I picked the book up to find for more scientific stories for the MCAT students I tutor, but the book also made me think about a number of questions outside of biology. Specifically, the contrast between the success of a number of informal groups and the limited scientific successes of isolated individuals made me think about the importance of collaborators to science and to almost all academic pursuits. The Eighth Day of Creation brims with successful examples of informal collaboration. All the big names in molecular biology wrote torrents of correspondence to each other. Various groups with obscure names like â€Å"The Phage Group† and the â€Å"RNA tie club† sprung up to disseminate ideas between different scientists working on different problems. The effort to discover the structure of DNA captures the importance of a collaborator. Rosalind Franklin, who took many of the X-Ray pictures that were essential to laying out the structure, generally worked alone. But it â€Å"is evident from her notebooks that she needed a collaborator† in order to check different ideas and ask different questions. In comparison, Watson and Crick, who laid out the structure of DNA, offer an example of a stellar collaboration where competition and camaraderie combined to drive both forward. To quote a friend of Judson’s about Watson and Crick, â€Å"you want to excel. You wa nt to perform for the other.† So blog readers, If you’re studying for the MCAT, I hope this blog inspires you to go out and find a collaborator and read The Eighth Day of Creation. Strike up a conversation with whoever seems interesting. Find a friend who thinks differently than you do and let your intellectual strengths complement each other as you work towards your shared goal, be it a high MCAT score, or a revolution in science. On the other hand, if you’re studying for the GRE, the SAT, or just are looking for helpful studying hints, by all means, go look for a collaborator--but stay away from the book. It is really long.

Bill of Rights - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1450 Downloads: 2 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Law Essay Type Analytical essay Tags: Human Rights Essay Did you like this example? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If a home grown Bill of Rights was adopted, fundamental rights and freedoms would be afforded better protection.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ Even prior to re-entering office in 1997 and overseeing the enactment of the Human Rights Act 1998, the Labour Party was constitutionally committed to the enactment of a Bill of Rights[1]: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights is a necessary first step, but it is not a substitute for our own Bill of Rightsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . In the period that has elapsed since the 1998 Act, the political imperative to achieve a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“home grownà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ Bill of Rights appears to have dwindled[2]. Lord Scarman in the Preface to Zanderà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s A Bill of Rights[3] points out: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Laws for the protection of the rights of individuals are of little value to the citizen if he cannot enforce them directly in the courts of his own country.à ¢Ã¢â€ š ¬Ã‚ Of course, since that was written, the argument that the enforcement of human rights in the UK required a trip to Strasbourg has largely disappeared but there remain fundamental concerns that the incorporation of the ECHR will prove a palliative rather than a panacea and will distract attention from the need for domestic measures to enshrine fundamental rights. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Bill of Rights" essay for you Create order It is submitted that a Bill of Rights is required for two reasons: first, it is necessary clearly to define the types of rights and freedoms which should be accorded special protection; second, having done so, it is necessary to embody them in a document which has particular legal status and priority. Oliver and Drewry[4] take the view that the 1998 Act achieves neither of these objectives; while à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“an important step in that directionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ , it fulfils neither of these objectives fully. What is required is a Bill of Rights with full constitutional authority. A major obstacle facing the implementation of a UK Bill of Rights is complacency. For centuries, our citizens have taken a pride in a system of democratic government which has been exported all over the world without the need for a written constitution. This type of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“if it ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t broke, donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t fix ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ mentality ignores the considerable further a dvantages which such an instrument might confer. While it is argued that the adoption of such a bill would interfere with the doctrine of separation of powers in that the interpretation of it would confer upon the judiciary a function akin to legislation, it can hardly be suggested that the present situation in which legislative and executive power are controlled by the process of judicial review (which has evolved at common law and has no legislative foundation) is more satisfactory. As has already been seen with the introduction of direct enforceability of the ECHR, the existence of a Bill of Rights would raise public awareness of rights issues. In common with the American Constitution, it could be taught in schools and engender a sense of civic rights and responsibilities which is presently lacking. Citizens would thus become empowered by readily accessible and understandable methods of enforcing their rights against those who might improperly use power over them. Most importa ntly, the Bill would act as a benchmark against which the actions of government could be challenged. The idea that current legislation reflects the will of the people is a fallacy. It is frequently the case that the political party holding a majority in Parliament has been elected by a minority of the population (and, as a result of the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“first past the postà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ system) even a minority of the overall votes cast. By convention, that party will nonetheless form the government of the day. Thereafter, the system of Cabinet government (dominated in any event by Prime Ministers who are less à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“first among equalsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ and increasingly presidential) and party whipping results in the passage of legislation such as that in respect of terrorism for which the popular mandate is questionable to say the least. A further significant advantage would lie in the unifying and codifying effect which such a Bill would have upon the present hotch-potch o f equality and discrimination legislation. At present, prohibition of discrimination is to be found in a variety of measures which have been introduced over time such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and the Race Relations Act 1976. More recently the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003[5] and the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003[6] have been introduced to combat discrimination on the grounds of religious belief and sexual orientation. A consideration of these two Statutory Instruments reveals the absurdity that each is couched in virtually identical terms to the other but nonetheless has had to be separately enacted. A Bill of Rights could provide for the essential elements of equality from which the rights of all minorities that are discriminated against could then derive. This would ensure that unlike at present legislation and case law to combat discrimination on such grounds as disability and age would keep pace with the more tr aditionally accepted evils of racial and sexual discrimination. Foremost among the voices that continues to call for a UK Bill of Rights is Liberty which has published a draft bill[7] which, while acknowledging the ECHR also draws upon the 1966 United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Liberty argues that a Bill of Rights should be enforceable by individuals against all agents of the state and this would therefore include the judiciary as well as national and local government. The present problem with the Human Rights Act 1998 is that it is possible for the government to circumvent its intended effect by passing legislation which is in conflict with the ECHR. A Bill of Rights, by contrast, would enjoy overriding status. As in the case of the USA Constitution, measures which violated the provisions of the Bill would be struck down as inferior legislation. This would obviate the present tension between enforcement of rights under the 1998 Act and the reme dies previously available by way of judicial review. Finally, the frequently expressed concerns that parliamentary sovereignty would be undermined by the existence of such a Bill can be demonstrated to be misplaced. Unlike the 1998 Act which derives from an external European Convention, the Bill of Rights would be the creation of Parliament itself. Its imposition and subsequent adherence to it would serve to enhance rather than diminish the authority of Parliament. In conclusion, therefore, the passage of the Human Rights Act 1998 may be described (however anomalous this may appear at first sight) as a retrograde step for the cause of the enactment of a Bill f Rights in this jurisdiction. While the implementation of the European Convention should be lauded for the focus that it has attracted to the subject of individual rights in relation to the potential misuse of power by the state, the temptation is now for those significant players in the political game who previously espouse d such constitutional reform to regard the issue as largely redundant. It has been demonstrated that this is not so and that the need for a comprehensive code remains as acute as ever not only further to enhance the protection of human rights introduced by the impact of European measures but also to provide a unifying and consolidating force in a jurisdiction which has relied for far too long upon the development of common law principles and remedies to safeguard the liberty and other freedoms of the individual. A Royal Commission should be tasked with taking forward to work commenced by groups such as Liberty in order to implement the unification of a wide range of rights under a single, comprehensible and accessible code of rights. Process of the Criminal Justice System and Its Structure

The process of the Criminal Justice system and its structure The process of the Criminal Justice system works around flexibility and compassion to the individual attempting, far more than it used to, to refrain from formulating biased and impulsive judgment. All situations of the individuals case and background are taken into consideration and various programs exist to afford the individual the opportunity of reforming rather than being punished. Similarly, too, the more serious the crime, the greater the amount of facts are required in order to prove that the crime was actually committed. Preferring to exonerate rather than convict, justice and compassion are, nonetheless, combined with attention also placed on assuring the community maximum protection. Extreme punishment such as incarceration is also far less common than it was in eh past with various other programs and approaches used to supplement and replace the institutions of jail and prison The process starts with the parole officer creating a plan of treatment for the offender based upon his or her character and needs, and, using available information and resources, designing a treatment plan. The treatment plan is a combination of the offenders needs and ways that the system can satisfy these needs. Sometimes, this may involve restorative justice where the offender dialogues with victim and seeks a way to redress harm. Simultaneously, the probation officer also has to supervise the offender to ensure that heShow MoreRelatedCriminal Justice Systems Paper1153 Words   |  5 PagesCriminal Justice System Paper The criminal justice system and the criminal justice process has shaped the laws of this country into what they are today from the concerns of politicians and government leaders as far back as the 1800s with crime control. How to Find a Good Information Technology School 2019

Careers in technology can be found at every professional level and, today, you can find courses taught for every type of job. For purposes of discussion, it helps to divide the field of technology into two roughly drawn areas: computer science and information technology. Computer science is the study of technologys hardware: what the component parts are, how the parts are built, and how the parts work. This can apply as much to a network router as it applies to a computer. Information technology deals with the use of the computers output: digital data in an assortment of formats. Thus, information technology (IT) includes the functions of the Internet, computer networks, software design, database security, and so forth. Colleges and universities have developed curricula for many subdivisions of these two broad areas. Degree levels ranging from an associates to a doctorate can be found for computer science, information technology and related fields of study. About 40% of Americas colleges and universities offer some form of extension learning or online education program, and there are many colleges that function solely online as well. So, availability for technology schools is widespread local community colleges, universities, or online schools all have technology programs. .ufb0ad87e218cc5a94378fed56137d7cd { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .ufb0ad87e218cc5a94378fed56137d7cd:active, .ufb0ad87e218cc5a94378fed56137d7cd:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .ufb0ad87e218cc5a94378fed56137d7cd { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .ufb0ad87e218cc5a94378fed56137d7cd .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .ufb0ad87e218cc5a94378fed56137d7cd .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .ufb0ad87e218cc5a94378fed56137d7cd:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ Buy and Sell Accounting BusinessesThere are courses of study for jobs in technology that do not lead a college diploma. 9- to 18-month programs that result in certification for the student can be found in areas such as network maintenance, office software, computer maintenance and other technical support positions. In the U.S. 397,122 children are living without permanent families in the foster care system, as of 2012, more than 58,000 children in the U.S. foster care system were placed in institutions or group homes, not in traditional foster homes (CCAI, 2012). Can these children developmental need be meet in institutions and enable children to make sucker attachments? The American Journal of Psychiatry’s article â€Å"A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Foster Care and Institutional Care for Children With Signs of Reactive Attachment Disorder† examines signs of emotionally withdrawn and indiscriminately social reactive attachment disorder in three groups of young Romanian children that were abandoned by their parents. The placement of children into an institution was made by Romanian child protective officials. The research group ensured that no child, once placed in foster care, through the Bucharest Early Intervention Project, would be returned to an institutional setting , either during or after the study (Smyke, 2012). The article follows perfect experimental design according to Introductory Psychology (Manley 2010). Three groups were used in each condition of the independent variable which is the condition of care each child receives. The three groups were: children that were placed into institutionalized care, children placed into foster care, and children who were raised in their biological families. Abolitionism and the Uplift Movement Free Essays

Justin Schenck March 7, 2013 Abolitionism Prof. Price The Uplift Movement and Origins of the â€Å"Black† Church In the late 18th century after the end of the revolution many new opportunities and hopefully thinking caused African Americans to start fighting for equality through the Uplift movement. This was an era where the Great Awakening and Enlightenment were becoming much more popular nationwide. We will write a custom essay sample on Abolitionism and the Uplift Movement or any similar topic only for you Order Now Secret abolition societies and organizations were sprouting up all across the new Republic. These free thinkers and new anti-slavery organizations called for the need of a place to gather without racial discrimination and where the members could feel comfortable. I believe that the solution for this problem was the development of African American churches where racial segregation was not present and the black community along with white activist could gather comfortably for worship, opportunity, social/scholastic education, and held as a place for various activist meetings. The first of the churches was founded by two former slaves, Richard Allen and Absalom Jones. The African Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1792. These churches created many leaders in the fight for racial equality and the abolishment of slavery. The churches were open to both free blacks and slaves. White slave owners would bring their slaves to church with them and justified slavery by saying that the church is teaching them Christianity even though they experienced very little access to a quality service. These new â€Å"black† churches gave African Americans the chance to decipher the bible in their own way and spiritual traditions which have carried on still to this day. Along with these new traditions created leadership roles in the church which were nonexistent in the mainstream churches. Not only were these churches a place for comfortable worship but also served as a â€Å"headquarters† for meetings among the anti-slavery and racial equality groups. Without these places for opportunities like jobs, petition rives, activist meetings, and schools the racial discrimination wouldn’t have gotten any better any faster. The schools created the knowledge to understand how to make it as a free person in the white society. Freed blacks were becoming much more literate which helped them learn how to fight for equality along with the religious side of equal rights for all men. Of course there were struggles along the way. The churches suffered violence from white denomi nations but the â€Å"black† churches would not fail under strong leadership. These preachers encouraged economic growth through community member’s donations and drives. This economic growth funded the schools and literacy programs. Also, Black leaders began to focus on politics and setting political goals. This was a time of growth all across the board and was the foundation of building a strong community, economic growth, and possibly most of all creating opportunity for leadership that had not been seen before.
